Farm Animal Welfare Coaltion

This Memorial Day, why not host a vegan cookout in commemoration of all the animals who suffer and die in slaughterhouses? Cows, chickens, pigs, and other farmed animals are made of flesh, bone, and blood, just as you and I are. They yearn to be with their loved ones, feel the warmth of the sun, breathe fresh air, and feel grass beneath their feet. They feel pain every bit as much as we do, are terrified by the sights and smells of the slaughterhouse, and are afraid to die.

Mohandas Gandhi once said that, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Let’s treat animals with respect and compassion this Memorial Day—and every other day of the year—simply by not eating them. See www.VegCooking.com for vegan recipes and cookout tips, and have a happy and humane holiday.

'Harm-Less Permissive License' Will Prohibit Software From Being Used to Harm Humans or Animals

For Immediate Release:
May 21, 2010

Joel Bartlett 757-622-7382

Norfolk, Va. -- PETA has joined forces with Swedish software developer Anders Sundman to create the first-ever license that will prohibit software from being used in any way that will harm humans or animals. The Harm-Less Permissive License (HPL) is free and open legal text for any software developer to use. In the weeks ahead, PETA will contact other compassionate software developers and encourage them to use HPL to ensure that their products aren't used for harmful purposes.

"I've seen images from inside slaughterhouses and modern fishing vessels, and it's obvious just how dependent these industries are on technology and computer software," says Sundman, a PETA supporter and longtime vegetarian. "My partnership with PETA aims to thwart attempts by anyone intending to use software...

New Safeway Policy and Academic Study Reveal Strong Consumer and Retailer Shift toward Cage-Free Eggs Driven by Prop 2’s Passage

Press Release

Thursday, Pleasanton, Calif.-based grocery giant Safeway announced that after continuing to work with The Humane Society of the United States, it will significantly increase its sales of cage-free eggs—from 6 percent to 12 percent—over the next two years.

Safeway's announcement comes as new research published in the Journal of Agricultural & Food Industrial Organization shows that publicity about California's Proposition 2 in 2008 increased consumer awareness about animal cruelty in industrial egg production, dramatically increasing in demand for cage-free eggs and decreasing demand for eggs from caged hens.

In "The Effect of Proposition 2 on the Demand for Eggs in California," Oklahoma State University professor Jayson L. Lusk investigates "the market effects of Proposition 2 by studying whether and how...

UK consumers more interested in animal welfare foodBy staff reporter, 24-May-2010

Two new surveys indicate that animal welfare is playing a greater role in food purchasing decisions in the UK, beating food additives as the most worrying issue in consumers’ minds.

Market researcher Mintel has found that as many as 4 in 10 UK shoppers say they are concerned about animal welfare overall - 46 per cent of women and per cent of men. The other big concerns were British origin (a priority for 37 per cent), and food additives (36 per cent), and desire for locally produced foods (35 per cent).

Organic food was said to be important for just 11 per cent of respondents in the new survey.

Mintel says the animal welfare factor has been helped by campaigning by celebrity chefs, such as Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver, who have raised awareness of poultry and pork farming practices.

But Kiti Soninen, food and drink analyst, said consumers might not always be willing to...

Suppose you were a furry or feathery creature, confined to a cramped crate or a tiny cage, with your sole purpose in life to produce eggs for some human's plate -- or to end up on that plate yourself. Don't you think your keepers should at least provide you with enough room to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and stretch your limbs?

Well, you don't get to vote on this question. American members of species homo sapiens are voting on this matter, however, and they seem to favor awarding you these minimal rights, available to any convicted murderer on death row. In 2008, a California ballot initiative to write the "turn around...
